Verizon Read Across America 4/14/09

The Verizon “Read across America” program proved to be a true ray of sunshine on what turned out to be a rainy Tuesday after noon. My videographer/Verizon volunteer, Operadella Williams, and I had the pleasure of hanging out with the students of Maymont elementary school as they chose from a sea of books donated by the Richmond-metro branch of Verizon. Just seeing all of their bright students and their smiling face took me back to elementary school when my biggest problem was which way to go when we were let out for recess. Throughout the day, we picked a select group of students from each class pre-h through 5th grade to ask a few question on what they felt about reading. I asked Marquesha, a member of the Maymont Elementary 3rd grade class, why she picked “Promise for Kids” as her choice to read. Her response “….Because you read it and you have to promise [things] to yourself”. That statement right there shows me that today’s children will be just fine, even in the midst of the current recession, global warming, possible wars, and all the other problems we face.
