Creigh Deeds Community Breakfast:The Politics of Promise

This morning I had the opportunity to attend the Creigh Deeds community breakfast at Fifth Baptist Church. Among the many supporters that attended were Pastor Marilyn Heckstall, Delegate Delores McQuinn, Senator Donald McEachin, Delegate Joseph Morrissey, Pastor Tyrone Nelson, Senator Henry Marsh III, Pastor Dwayne Whitehead, Senator Creghe Deeds, and last but not least Delegate Jennifer McClellan. The breakfast was commemorate and display Senator Deeds campaign for Governor. The event was jam-packed full of information on the goals, values, and initiatives of Senator Deeds' campaign. All of this was exactly what I expected of this event. What I did not expect was the highlight speech of the day to come from someone other than the man of the hour. This suprise came in the form of a speech entitled "What it means to be a Democrat" from none other than Delegate Jennifer McClellan. What struck me beside the passion she displayed in here speech and how personable she was is that she touch on the subject of what it means to serve. She stated that "Society is only as strong as it's weakest member". She spoke about how our budget priorities should not hurt those that are hurting the most the least. Delegate McClellan really showed how personable she was when joking with the audience stating "I'm not a morning person. So it takes a special person to get me up at 6am".Which brings me to the final highlight of the evening. To cap the breakfast off we recieved a pasionate speech by Senator Creigh Deeds. The highlight of speech was a qoute that sums up how he feels about the changes that need to be made in our community, "Your either all in, or not in at all". Senator Deeds also spoke about his plans to bring more jobs and higher education opportunities to Virginia. As I sat back absorbing the roar of the crowd, the passion in Senator Deeds voice, and the goals he has set in place,I found myself amazed that this man went from a young man who didn't have much to a symbol of hope for our community. Its safe to say he just might have my vote.
